Joy Marie Smith is a creative leader, producer, and content strategist specializing in narrative audio, digital media, and children’s entertainment. With more than fifteen years of experience, Joy is known for blending creative vision with technical expertise to develop award-winning podcasts, audiobooks, immersive audio dramas, and multimedia storytelling experiences.

Joy’s broad creative toolkit allows her to operate fluidly at both strategic and hands-on levels. She began her career as a freelance sound designer and editor, engineering recording sessions and managing post-production for audiobooks and indie films - work that sharpened her instincts for pacing, tone, and narrative detail.

In 2011, she joined Audible, where she advanced from Audio Editor to Studios Producer, producing and directing more than 200 projects across Audible Studios and Audible Originals. Her work included scripted podcasts, full ensemble audio dramas, celebrity narrations, and Alexa interactive audio experiences. She also played a key role in expanding Audible’s creative capabilities into full multimedia production, launching the company’s U.S. video branch.

In 2022, Joy joined Rebel Girls, first as Director of Audio Production and then as Head of Digital Content. In this expanded role, she led creative strategy across the brand’s audio and video platforms. Under her leadership, the Rebel Girls YouTube channel grew from 28,000 to 100,000 subscribers in a single year, releasing more than 100 original videos - a testament to her ability to blend creative vision with production discipline.

During her tenure at Rebel Girls, Joy oversaw end-to-end creative services for over 300 video and podcast productions, from concept development and scripting to final edit and delivery, and introduced new-to-market formats through strategic partnerships. Her work contributed to the brand earning more than 30 major industry awards, including 6 Webby Awards, 13 Signal Awards, and multiple Telly and Listener’s Choice Awards.

Guided by her Asian heritage and multicultural perspective, Joy is committed to amplifying diverse voices and building inclusive creative environments. She has championed thoughtful casting practices, mentored emerging talent, and collaborated with subject-matter experts to ensure authenticity and care in the stories she helps bring to life.

Joy holds a BFA in Film & Television from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She is an associate member of the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and serves on the Signal Awards and Webby Awards Judging panels. She continues to leverage her creative and technical foundation to build media that matters, whether crafted for audio-first listeners, visual-first viewers, young audiences, or global communities.
